The Montecristo Cup 2012

In 2012, there will be two days of individual tournament play in Varadero, Cuba. The Montecristo Cup will be given to the best individual net score from these days.

The competition is open to those with a handicap of 24 or under (men) and 30 or under (women). Official certification of their handicap is required by all players and must be shown to the Club.

The Montecristo Cup 2011, for lowest net score

The 2011 Montecristo Cup was held on April 15th-16th 2011 at Varadero Golf Club, Cuba. On Thursday 14th there was a practice round available for all players. Friday 15th and Saturday 16th were the tournament days with the prize-giving and oceanfront dinner on the Saturday.

The guest of honour this year was Tony Jacklin CBE, the most successful British player of his generation. He was also the most successful European Ryder Cup captain ever. He attended the event to watch the activities and to congratulate the winners.

Mr Dionisio Garcia Esquivias of Spain won The Montecristo Cup and received a fine watch from Cuervo y Sobrinos, the watchmakers of Havana. The runners up were Ms. Kim of Korea and Mr. Steve Williams of Canada.

The Longest Drive for a woman was made by Ingrid Villemur, and for a man by Daniel Batista. The Putting Competition was won by Yorkis Cabrera.

The Montecristo Cup 2010, for lowest net score

The event was held on Saturday April 24th 2010. Esencia Hotels and Resorts, who are partnered with Palmares to develop a number of golf resorts in Cuba, presented Cuba’s David Villafana (handicap 16) with The Montecristo Cup. As a prize he accepted a fine gentleman’s watch, made and given by Cuervo y Sobrinos, from Alvaro Quiros. He won with a net score of 66.

The Montecristo Cup 2009, for lowest net score

The event was held on Saturday 2nd May 2009. Players began with a shotgun start under clear blue skies and the competition was played under strict Rules of Golf and etiquette as published by the Royal & Ancient. The tournament was played by International and Cuban players with Golf legend Ernie Els as guest of honour and prize-giver

1st Place
Xavier Espot Miró, the Ambassador for Andorra to Spain, with net score of  67 and a handicap of 14. He accepted a magnificent watch from Cuervo y Sobrinos and a framed photograph of Che Guevara playing Golf from the Cuban Government.

2nd Place
Leonel Darias, from Cuba, with a net score of 67 and a handicap of 20. He accepted a ticket from Virgin Atlantic.

3rd Place
Juan Manuel Lopez, from Cuba, with a net score of 68 and a handicap of 17

 Cuba is an ideal location for golf tournaments and has a bright future with regard to courses, and The Montecristo Cup and Esencia Cup tournaments lead the way, offering a challenging and enjoyable game - where else can you light up a cigar and strike the ball?
